A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has devastated Myanmar, leaving thousands dead. The destruction is catastrophic: roads, buildings, hospitals, schools, and water supplies are gone, and vital services have been cut off. Millions are without access to clean water, food, and medical care.
Myanmar was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with a third of the population in need of aid. Now, the situation is even more dire.
Older people, already at high risk in such disasters, are facing the greatest challenges. Many live with chronic health conditions or disabilities, making it harder for them to survive and access vital aid.
HelpAge International is working through our local partner, AGE Myanmar, with support from Age International and the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC), to provide urgent assistance, including healthcare, food, cash, and mental health support. But more is needed to ensure that older people are not left behind.
