After the military coup in Myanmar that took place in 2021, older people share stories of coming together to support each other and their families despite difficulties created by the new regime.
Older people in Myanmar have shown resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Many older people have adapted their livelihoods and have faced difficulties accessing their pensions due to the political turmoil.
HelpAge has been working with community-based groups led by older people, which aim to improve the self-reliance of older people through the provision of cash support, mental health services, and employment opportunities.
An important aspect of the groups is their intergenerational approach, which includes other members of the community. Young people with disabilities also attend training programs and receive grants to start their own businesses, improving their livelihoods and contributing to their communities. HelpAge provides support to people with disabilities and helps them to improve their livelihoods.
