Statement on ceasefire in Gaza

Published

The announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza brings much-needed relief to millions. The population of the territory has undergone unimaginable hardships over the last 16 months, along with others in the region, who have all suffered from the fallout of this terrible war.

If this moment of optimism and hope is not to be extinguished, it is critical that all parties fully implement the agreement so that the ceasefire transforms into a lasting and durable peace.

Chris McIvor, Regional Representative for Eurasia and the Middle East at HelpAge International.

“To begin the process of rebuilding and recovery, much needed humanitarian aid must be delivered to Gaza, with priority given to those most in need. All remaining hostages, including the older people amongst them, must also be released.”

HelpAge is calling for the humanitarian response to prioritise the most at-risk groups, most of whom have exhausted their resilience and capacity to cope. The lack of access to essential healthcare, shelter, and support will have taken a significant toll on the territory’s older people who have faced significant challenges escaping conflict areas.  The physical and emotional impact of multiple displacements on older people cannot be overestimated.

HelpAge’s humanitarian partners in Gaza, Juzoor for Health and Social Development and the Palestinian Agricultural Development Association have worked exhaustively to respond to the needs of older people, who are consistently overlooked in emergency response and their needs and agency frequently ignored.

“We would like to express our deep appreciation of our partners in Gaza for all their efforts during the war, at considerable risk to their staff and families. Their dedication to providing essential support and care under the most challenging of circumstances has provided a lifeline for many older people and their families, not only in Gaza but also in the West Bank,” said Chris McIvor.

“We are committed to supporting them through this next crucial phase of rebuilding and recovery and to ensure that the voices of older people are heard and their rights respected.”
