Rebuilding lives: supporting older people in Morocco one year after the devastating earthquake

Published

On September 8, 2023, a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Morocco, causing destruction across the high-altitude Atlas Mountains region. The earthquake displaced thousands and claimed many lives. As the harsh winter months set in, the situation became even more dire, with older people, particularly vulnerable during such crises, facing an uphill battle to rebuild their lives.

Supported by HelpAge International, Action For Humanity (AFH) launched a critical project to support 725 families in the mountainous Al Haouz region. This initiative focused on providing essential winter relief, ensuring that those affected by the earthquake, especially older people, had the necessary resources to withstand the severe winter season.

One year on, the challenges remain immense. Older people in Morocco continue to struggle as they attempt to rebuild their lives. The support provided through this project has been vital in helping them navigate the aftermath of the earthquake, but the road to recovery is long, and the needs of these vulnerable communities persist.
