Abuse of older people takes many different forms.
They face discrimination on the grounds of their age, sex, ethnic origin, where they live, disability, poverty, sexuality or level of literacy.

The world is ageing, but age discrimination is rife and existing human rights mechanisms do not protect the rights of older people.
The time has come for an international convention on the rights of older people.
To get a new convention on the rights of older people we need support from governments, older people, the public, NGOs and the international human rights system. A number of steps must be taken.
By law, older people in Mozambique are entitled to free consultations and medicine at health centres. But in 2008, 85% of older people over 15 communities had to pay for consultations and medication.
